Feature Release: Image Cropping

Today we are launching a new feature in Plate. We are expanding the image element of all websites on the Plate platform to include the ability to crop images. From now on, you no longer need to do this in Photoshop or other image editing programs but can do it directly in the CMS. This update has been automatically rolled out to all customers, and no additional front-end code implementation is required.

Forms of Cropping

We offer you the choice between different forms of cropping: fixed crop, preferred crop, and free crop. If you choose to implement a fixed crop on your site, a developer can set a required ratio beforehand, which cannot be deviated from. If you opt for a preferred crop, you can specify a suggested ratio that will be used as standard, but a content editor can still choose free crops if they wish to deviate.

The free crop gives you the choice to select a random section, or you can use one of four predefined crop ratios:

  • 1:1 Crop (square)
  • 4:3 Crop (landscape)
  • 2:3 Crop (portrait)
  • 16:9 Crop (header)

Separate Crops for Mobile and Desktop

Suppose you want a different crop for the same image on mobile and desktop; you will need to activate this in the front-end code. You can use two separate content fields as image elements for this. The image can then refer to the same image in the media library for both desktop and mobile. Once you have this option, you can, for example, activate a 2:3 crop on mobile and a 4:3 crop on desktop for the same image.

Want to see the feature in action? Quickly log into your CMS and get started with this update. If you have further questions, send a message to pieter@getplate.com.
